Business Continuity Planning on the High Seas

Client : Thomas Miller

Overview

Thomas Miller is the world leader in providing insurance solutions to the international shipping and transport industry.

It has a unique position in the global marine industry and currently insures more than 70% of the world's container fleet, 19% of the world's ocean-going fleet, 2,000 port/terminal operations and over 4,000 transport and logistics operations through offices in 23 locations including London, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Jersey.

The Business Requirement

Business continuity planning has become an essential requirement to help cope with all types of business disasters and disruptions, ranging from IT failures to terrorist attacks on the high seas.

To meet the increasing level of threats and disruptions facing businesses in the global marine industry and elsewhere, Thomas Miller needed to update its business continuity plans.

The Solution

Garrison Continuity was called in because of its experience of contingency planning for the shipping industry, working with organisations such as Lloyds Register.

London plays a pivotal role in Thomas Miller's global operations and a number of measures were taken to ensure that other locations could provide full back-up in the event of an IT failure. A key part of this was the development of a mirror data centre in the UK to provide the highest levels of resilience.

To ensure compliance with FSA regulations Garrison also developed a thorough testing programme, including a series of workshop exercises at the UK head office, to check that both the content and usage of business continuity plans were fully understood by staff.
