Committed to the Environment, and to Business Continuity

Client : DEFRA

Overview

Defra is the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Its purpose is to drive forward the programmes for sustainable development - weaving together economic, social and environmental concerns.

It brings together all aspects of the environment, farming and food production, and is a focal point for all rural policy relating to people, the economy and the environment. Defra's work has a strong international dimension, with roles in both European Union and global policy making.

The Business Requirement

To improve its effective and efficient response to emergencies or disruptions, Defra needed to standardise its procedures across the organisation in line with government requirements for business continuity.

With effective business continuity arrangements in place Defra could ensure its ability to address a wide range of outward facing emergencies where it would take a leading role, such as the foot and mouth outbreak. It would also be able to safeguard the flow of payments and subsidies from the European Union in the event of a serious disruption.

The Solution

Garrison Continuity first organised a series of workshops with the Defra Business Continuity Team, to identify key issues and expectations. Garrison then developed a work programme that would lead to unified business continuity planning across the organisation.

The programme has helped to embed the need for a coordinated approach at Defra, providing Business Continuity Response Teams with expert advice and training in business continuity strategy, policy and methods.

Through implementing the programme, Defra has already moved forward significantly in developing its business continuity capability, and is now better positioned to deal with future disruptions.
